xxiii SUN HUNG KAI PROPERTIES Above When the Tsing Ma Bridge was inaugurated on 27 April 1997 SHKP was the sole sponsor of a 20-minute, firework display that celebrated the completion of one of the city’s key infrastructure undertakings. It was estimated that more than 100,000 people watched the show, most of them standing along Castle Peak Road as the best available vantage point. Left At first sight it may seem strange that the Group built and operates a section of a major highway. The logic, however, is inescapable. Yuen Long, one of the early new towns, was slow to develop as compared to its peers. New residents were reluctant to move there because, with poor transport links, getting to work in the urban area was a headache.
