SHKP Volunteer Team back in action to spread care across the community

26.06.2020

As the epidemic in Hong Kong has receded in recent months, the SHKP Volunteer Team has been back in action visiting and supporting the underprivileged in the community. Even though everyone was wearing a mask, the volunteers communicated their sincere care to the community and the beneficiaries.

Joyful Family Connection move-in support programme

The SHKP Volunteer Team recently worked with the Social Welfare Department and Yang Memorial Methodist Social Service to support the move-in of Fu Fai House residents in Fu Shan Estate. They provided elderly residents, residents with disabilities and single-parent families with services including pre-move-in checks, flooring and CFL installation. The volunteers made use of their professional skills to do the pre-move-in checks and basic renovation for the beneficiary families. They also passed on their relevant experience, knowledge and techniques by publishing and distributing a pre-move-in check list and renovation guide. After training and assessment, they became SHKP’s community volunteer partners, who help establish stronger, more sustainable mutual community neighbourhood support, passing on SHKP’s spirit of volunteerism.

Although there were still a few coronavirus cases in the city and despite the prohibition on group gatherings, along with typhoon signal no. 3, the volunteers were determined to serve the community and still attended the training day. To ensure everyone’s well-being, all participants were required to have their body temperature taken and fill out a health declaration form. Each training room was equipped with hand sanitizers and surgical masks, and only a limited number of people were allowed at a time, for peace of mind.

Spreading love during the Dragon Boat Festival

The Building Homes with Heart Caring Initiative volunteers recently visited 1,500 elderly singletons and couples who reside in Sham Shui Po and Tuen Mun, giving them blessings and lucky gift bags to celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival. The thoughtful gift bags from SHKP were filled with festive rice dumplings, other types of food and anti-pandemic items for their enjoyment and use during the festival.
