SHKP cares for seniors with 'little' works at Lai Tak Tsuen

07.05.2019

Participants of the 'Big Little Things' volunteer project come from various SHKP departments, including Construction, Project Management, Property Management, Project Monitoring, Corporate Communications, Non-Property Portfolio Businesses, YATA as well as SmarTone.

In response to a call by the Our Hong Kong Foundation, SHKP recently took part in the 'Big Little Things' project to enhance the living environment of elderly people at Lai Tak Tsuen through a series of simple works.

Pooling colleagues together in a short time

Embracing the Group's values of Quality, Speed, Efficiency, and Teamwork, volunteers from eight departments and SHKP's subsidiaries were gathered within a short period of time to discuss, prepare and execute the project. In order to understand the true needs of seniors, they specially paid home visits at Lai Tak Tsuen so that recipients could experience SHKP's customer-centric corporate culture. Cecilia Ho from Non-Property Portfolio Businesses was tasked with coordination. She said, 'What impressed me most during the whole process was the enthusiasm of our colleagues as well as the strong support we received from our senior management.' To benefit more people, SHKP will additionally extend the renovation concepts to other needy elderly people living in Lai Tak Tsuen through the St. James' Settlement.

Low cost, high efficiency improvement works

One of the unique aspects of this project is how it encourages volunteer enterprises to devise low-cost solutions that can be applied in a wider context to benefit more people in the future. George Lee, one of the participants from the Construction department, remarked that the company had helped elderly recipients set up a transparent plastic curtain on the balcony and installed a ventilation window in the gap atop the toilet door in the flat.

While the renovation work SHKP provided for the seniors may seem 'insignificant', both Cecilia and George think that even the 'littlest things' are well worth the effort as long as the recipients' genuine needs can be satisfied.
