Hong Kong people are becoming more and more health-conscious. This year, in particular, the pandemic has prompted us to get closer to nature and enjoy the fresh air. Urban Farm, located at Sky Garden, L5, Metroplaza, spans over 10,000 square feet. It is the city's first mall farm and is open to the public all day, every day. Surrounded by lush green plants, you can get a taste of farming there during weekends and holidays.
Urban Farm is jointly operated by Metroplaza and social enterprise Rooftop Republic. Managed by local organic farmers and well-trained, hearing-impaired farming assistants, the farm yields almost 240 kg of produce per year and produces over 40 types of crops, including seasonal fruit, vegetables, herbs and edible flowers, which have grown in popularity in recent years. Urban Farm has adopted green management measures, including a modern drip irrigation system, which allows water to drip directly to the soil and uses less water than traditional sprinkler irrigation. Composting facilities have also been set up to collect plant waste, such as dried leaves, waste vegetables and weeds, which naturally decompose into organic fertilizer, making good use of natural resources.
To get closer to the community, Urban Farm organizes regular guided tours and workshops on various topics, such as farming techniques, and making floral fruit tea and floral wax tablets. The farm gives back to the community by donating produce to food banks. Last year, it donated over 100 kg of produce to Food Grace, a charitable organization, benefitting families in need.
Apart from Urban Farm, Metroplaza boasts a 40,000-square-foot outdoor Piazza, in which different flower varieties are planted each season. It is like walking into a mesmerizing sea of flowers. Don't forget to visit the Metroplaza urban oasis for an idyllic experience!
