SHKP sponsored the children of our staff to study under a one-year overseas exchange programme through the SHKP-AFS Intercultural Exchanges scholarship. Recently, two students who just returned from abroad – Leung Lok Yee, daughter of Leung Cheuk Sun from Hong Yip; and Tam Shu Man, daughter of Danny Tam from the Project Monitoring Department – shared their overseas exchange experiences with this year's scholarship recipients – Anson Chan, son of Evelyn Chan from Hong Yip; and Luk Ka Wai, daughter of Cherry Tam from Kai Shing.
Leung Lok Yee went to the Czech Republic for her exchange programme. She recalled that she tried her best to develop her culinary skills in order to please her host family in Europe, despite the fact that she rarely did any housework in Hong Kong. She has since built a close relationship with her host family, and plans to go back to the Czech Republic to visit them.
On the other hand, Tam Shu Man who went to Belgium on the exchange programme changed her host family multiple times, so the circumstances were not what she had expected. However, this experience greatly enhanced her problem-solving skills and ability to cope with adversity. The parents of both exchange students said that this experience has made them realized the importance of letting their children learn how to be independent.
