Our Construction Department colleagues, who value teamwork, have a great passion for football as well as city orienteering, a sport that emphasizes cooperation among all team members. In fact, they have been among the top three regulars in the Salvation Army Orienteering challenge. In this year's competition, the team, comprising Construction Team B colleagues Raymond, Samuel, Tommy and Wai-yip, won the first runner-up prize. Their motto of 'We win together, we lose together' serves as the precise 'down-to-earth' definition of 'team spirit'.
Realizing members' strengths through division of labour
The Salvation Army Orienteering requires participating teams to look for checkpoints worth various points in different districts using a wordless map within two hours. The team that scores the highest in the shortest time is crowned the champion. As three-time champions of the competition, Raymond and his team members rely on mutual cooperation and a clear division of labour. For example, Samuel was responsible for exploring the roads and finding the checkpoints while Tommy monitored the time and overall planning, and Raymond as well as Wai-yip helped study the maps and provide support. They joked that orienteering is similar to their daily work in the sense that in order to optimize the strengths of the team, there must be sufficient communication and a unanimous opinion.
Satisfaction gained from being in the same boat
With unswerving determination, the team members advance and retreat together regardless of winning or losing while never leaving their colleagues behind for results. They commented, 'Our team members at times had experienced cramps and fatigue during the competition. But if a member is not feeling well, the rest of us will slow down despite falling behind. Anyway, we win as a team and we lose as a team!'
Colleagues participate with the full support of the company
With a long-standing commitment to promoting 'sports for charity', SHKP has sponsored the Salvation Army Orienteering for many years while encouraging colleagues' active participation. Five teams took part in this year's competition. In addition to the first runner-up team of Raymond, Samuel, Tommy and Wai-yip, the other two SHKP teams as well finished second runner-up and third runner-up; proof positive that more and more of our colleagues are falling in love with this nighttime sport!
