Continuous learning to strive for a brighter career – Interview with Benny Lau, property and facility officer in Valais 02.11.2022 Everyone loves a comfortable, low-stress job. But to transform our occupation into a profession, we need to step out of our comfort zone, equip ourselves to be ready for new challenges. – Benny Lau, property and facility officer in Valais Given his passion for sports, Benny studied in the Higher Diploma in Sport and Recreation Management programme after graduating from secondary school. He then worked part-time in the clubhouse of a residential building. "Perhaps everyone knew that I was a student and needed to learn while working, so my supervisors and the residents were kind and patient with me," he said. Looking back on his previous job, Benny said it was a good experience, as he did not feel stressed. "Perhaps since the clubhouse is a leisure facility, it makes the residents feel relaxed, more easy-going and communicative, so it was not difficult for me to get close to and build good relationship with them," he said. The road to becoming an all-round property management officer Although Benny enjoyed his work, he wanted to seek more career opportunities, so after graduating he joined Hong Yip as an assistant property officer in Valais. Along with managing the clubhouse, he was involved in various issues, including the security, landscaping, engineering in the property and handling requests from residents. "I was really nervous when I started working here," he said. "Thanks to the support of my colleagues, I'm now familiar with the daily work." Owing to his excellent performance, he was offered new tasks and promoted to managerial level by his supervisor. Benny was delighted, but he wondered if he needed to enhance his competence, so he decided to continue studying to enhance his professional standard. Striving for continuous learning and achieving self-enhancement "I knew that Hong Yip had a 'People Development Academy', but I didn’t realize it offered free, professional diploma courses!" said Benny, so he took diploma courses organized by the academy in his spare time. He said that he asked his teacher and classmates for advice when he faced difficulties, and his supervisor would help him as a 'tutor'. Benny completed the Diploma in Integrated Property Services Management (QF Level 3) thanks to his continuous efforts. He has continued his learning journey and is now taking the Professional Diploma in Integrated Property Services Management (QF Level 4) and Advanced Diploma in Integrated Property Services Management (QF Level 4) to build a solid foundation for his career development. Hong Yip becomes the first qualified property management company to organize a QF Level 4 programme and offer specified academic qualifications recognized by the Property Management Services Authority in Hong Kong Along with the professional development of the property management industry, Hong Yip established the Hong Yip People Development Academy (HYPDA) and in 2010, became the first property management company to offer courses recognized by the Qualification Framework (QF). HYPDA has continued to organize various training course to help colleagues obtain higher recognized qualifications. In March 2022, Hong Yip received approval from the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications to offer an Advanced Diploma in Integrated Property Services Management (QF Level 4) programme, which is also recognized as a specified academic qualification for the Property Management Practitioner (Tier 2) Licence by the Property Management Services Authority. As a result, Hong Yip became the first qualified property management company in Hong Kong to organize a QF Level 4 programme and offer specified academic qualifications recognized by the Property Management Services Authority.
