Five strategies for coping with anxiety amid the virus outbreak

17.03.2020

As you try to keep up with the virus updates every day and worry about whether you have enough protective items, do you ever feel worried and anxious? If you or your loved ones experience a rapid heart rate, shortness of breath, muscle twitching, insomnia, intense fear and a sense of helplessness, irritability or outbursts of anger, you must be vigilant and cautious. You can try managing your anxiety in the following five ways:

1.    Understanding that it is normal to be anxious: When facing things beyond our control, it is perfectly normal to worry. When changing difficult circumstance is not possible, acknowledging your emotions is a better solution than suppressing them.

2.    Adopting a healthy lifestyle: Eating a balanced diet, exercising regularly, getting enough sleep, getting some sun, and talking with others can help reduce anxiety.

3.    Adopting rational thinking: When anxiety takes over, you cannot think rationally. Try the following ways to calm down.

  • Take a deep breath and say to yourself: "Stay calm! I can manage it!" five times.
  • Ask yourself "What am I worrying about?" and jot down your fears and the causes.
  • Ask yourself "Where does this information come from? Is it fact or rumour? Do I have adequate information for a rational conclusion?"
  • Take deep, long, slow breaths. Shift your attention from your worries to your breathing.

4.    Seeking proper information: Get accurate virus and prevention information from trusted sources to take positive action. Visit authoritative websites such as the Department of Health:

5.    Seeking professional help: If your negative emotions have overtaken your day-to-day life and work, consult a professional as soon as possible.
